About The Show
Provoke believes the desire for social justice has long been a central theme, not only of our own Roman Catholic tradition, but of all the world religions. Provoke starts with that desire and engages you from the vantage of your own faith. As we explore issues of social justice and ethics, we do so within the context of inter-religious dialogue, and in the process, discover a rich treasure of common values.

Provoke believes communications is a mighty tool in the promotion of peace and justice. In a culture where many voices are absent from the more powerful media, Provoke tackles issues that affect the poor and marginalized throughout the world and gives a voice not only to them, but also to those working on their behalf. Provoke is not just another talk show where both guests and listeners express their opinions about what the "Other" should do to solve a problem. Instead, Provoke speaks eloquently to the individual, calling forth a profound and personal response to issues of the day and encouraging thoughtful reflection. Only after that do we hope to motivate action in our listeners. Because when all is said and done, we know that living faith requires loving action.

About The Host
Father Stephen Spahn, SJ, is a Jesuit priest and currently resides at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Washington, DC. Father Spahn received his Certificat d'Etudes Politiques from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Paris, France; B.S. and M.S. degrees in International Politics and Foreign Policy Studies from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, Washington DC; his M.A. in Philosophy from Fordham University, New York; and his Masters of Divinity and Theology from Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In addition, Fr. Spahn has done case studies of the U.S. foreign policy in the Sudan and has traveled to and worked in Mexico, Haiti, and China among others. Father Spahn serves as the host and narrator for Provoke when he is not fulfilling his main duty as vocation promoter for the Maryland Province of the Jesuits.

About the Producer
Claire Hartman spent the first part of her career in advertising, writing and producing TV commercials before taking up the helm at Provoke Radio. Claire is a lay Catholic with a strong interest in “the Gospel applied to the 21st century.” She finds writing and producing Provoke to be the perfect melding of her storytelling skills and her commitment to social justice. For Claire, the best part of producing Provoke is the opportunities she has to meet ordinary people doing extraordinary things in the name of peace and justice. “These are people you might not otherwise hear about…but should. And they inspire me every day.” Claire is the main contact for Provoke. Feel free to e-mail her with questions, comments or suggestions anytime at: producer@provokeradio.com.

About The (Local) Database
Provoke's database is primarily for the Maryland area, where Provoke originated. It provides contact information for a variety of programs, initiatives, and organizations involved in charity and social justice, outreach and advocacy. The list includes both faith-based and secular organizations and all are in need of volunteers and support. There are some national organizations listed. If you live outside the Maryland area and are interested in volunteering, check the web for programs in your area.
